This picture is of my grandfather, Joseph Malfara. He passed away May 21, 2013, and this picture was taken in January of 2013. I know this contest is mainly about literal monsters and scary things, but what my grandfather was fighting, was incredibly scary. He smoked 2 packs a day, for 50 years, causing COPD and Stage 3 Lung Cancer. He also had diabetes, congestive heart failure (seen by his pace maker in the photo), and many other health issues. My grandfather is my hero for fighting this horrific fight. No matter whether he was in the hospital, a rehab center, or in the comfort of his own home, he was ALWAYS joking around and making everyone smile, even when he could not. The cancer and many other health problems he developed from smoking 2 packs a day for 50 years was a scary, and horrific thing.

Rest in peace, Joseph Malfara.

*I was given permission by him before he passed away to use this photo for anything I wish, which is why I am entering it in this contest.*

I am sorry you lost him. My dad, as well, could not stop smoking and died of lung cancer.
I am asking permission to use the picture of your grandfather in my teaching presentation on lung cancer and emphysema. I am teaching nurses and others how to help such patients, whose quality of life is rather miserable.
Please let me know if you will approve this.

This is a very touching and in your face photograph. My grandfather died of emphysema and diabetes and put stubbornness in not obeying the doctors on anything. He shriveled away into nothing. He was my grandpa and he wasn't supposed to leave me so soon. :( I wish the young people of young people in this country and others would look at this and realize it really could be them some day. But they all have that demeanor that "it won't happen to me"... Sadly it will and it crushes my heart to see three of my four children smoking and nothing I say or do seems to get thru to them. They pay up to $7 a day for a pack of smokes and then complain because they don't have money for food or gas. What has this world created??? Great implementation! :)

I think there's nothing more powerful than the truth, which is exactly what this photo presents.
You're not stretching or distorting it, making it into something it isn't.
The fact that you present a photograph of an actual victim of cancer, whom you knew and were close to, really leaves an impact.
I'm nearly in tears.

I am sorry for your lose I have a great aunt who is going through some of the same things your grandfather went through but I hope the Lord will bring you joy out of sorrow! Great entry if I was a judge for this contest I would pick yours to be the winner! I have a verse from Jeremiah 31:13 "I will turn their mourning into gladness; I will give them comfort and joy instead of sorrow." A verse from the Bible I think about when I feel depressed or sad. I hope it will help you to feel better.
